Info-Point software

An Info-Point is a stand-alone web server that does not require a connection to the Internet. Internally it is a complex set of software set up to appear as a standard website server. A "captive portal" ensures that users logged on the the WiFi can easily find the website content using their ordinary web browser. This device does not "push" content to users mobile devices. It works because users want to find the content.

As shipped, the Info-Point has Drupal CMS installed to provide a simple interface for owners to upload their own content without the need for special technical skills. Experienced web designers and programmers may overwrite the supplied CMS with their own software and will want to know the following technical details.

  • The web server is a standard LAMP stack:
    • Debian Linux
    • mySQL database
    • Apache2 server
    • PHP 5.x installed
  • Mod rewrite enabled
  • PHP pear installed (plus many other helper libraries)
  • PHPmyAdmin installed
  • SSH server enabled
  • SFTP enabled
  • Legacy FTP server enabled
  • "Owner" account to give access to web server filesystem

Root access is available to bona fide owners on request, but please note all end user files and configurations are accessible from the owner account.

Info-Point hardware

Info-Point comes as a complete and ready-to-use unit comprising:

  • A specialist computer motherboard
  • Solid state storage for software and content
  • A Wi-Fi hardware module
  • A power adaptor
  • An enclosure suitable for indoor or sheltered outdoor use
  • An external RP-SMA Wi-Fi connector and antenna
  • Pre-installed software to operate all the functions
  • Demonstration content examples

We supply the Info-Point in a ventilated case that should be suitable for most applications and recommend:

  • The unit is protected from direct exposure to the elements, including direct sunlight
  • For outdoor applications a shed or outbuilding or wodden box may offer suitable protection
  • Route any cables in a downward direction from the unit so that gravity pulls any water away from the unit
  • Always use the supplied stand-off mountings to ensure adequate ventilation

We are continually developing Info-Point and extending its capabilities. We are interested in understanding any requirements that you have in order to see if they could become part of our development roadmap.

The Info-Point is built using open source software and we gratefully acknowledge the work and the licenses under which that work has been published. The following pages are a non exhaustive list of software projects that we have used to build the Info-Point product and we draw your attention to the licences published on each of the websites listed below.

Copies of the licences are also embedded within the Info-Point in accordance with the various requirements set out within those licenses.

We have not modified any source code, so you may download source code directly from the listed projects.

As with any computer based product some non-free, non open source software has been used at the firmware level. These software packages have been incorporated under proprietary licenses, copies of which are typically embedded with the code.

Generally, you may use or resell this product as you wish but the licenses still apply if you resell. You can edit or adapt the open source code as long as you still apply the licences to any derivatives and make your edits available.
